Volunteers make the world go round!

Last night I had the pleasure of attending Tyndale St-Georges Community Centre's annual volunteer recognition dinner. This allowed me the chance to meet with and be inspired by many of the diverse and dynamic people who help keep the centre running each and every day.

What amazed me most about some of the people I met? Many of them weren't from Montreal! In fact, the two people that I had the good fortune of eating dinner with weren't even from Canada! First there was Ron, an American ex-pat who "followed love to Montreal" from San Francisco a few years ago. As a recent retiree, he wanted to keep himself busy and put his dance and music skills to good use by working with primary school-aged children. Ron came to Tyndale last fall and also works at an elementary school, wow!

Next was the lovely Nasim, who immigrated to Canada only four months ago from Tehran, Iran. But she wasted no time jumping right into the local lifestyle and decided to give back to the community right away by volunteering at Tyndale. Pretty impressive considering she's still looking for a job in her field and getting to know this great city (and Canadian culture, to boot!). She goes through all of it with a big smile and a passion for bike rides and is an absolute inspiration.

Today I send my hooray to volunteers, not only Ron, Nasim and the other fabulous people at Tyndale but volunteers everywhere who find the time each and every week to give a little something back to their communities and other neighbourhoods around the world. Hooray!

Free flowers for Montreal South-Westerners!

As a (newly) avid gardener, I'm always excited to learn about initiatives put into place to educate and motivate people around the world of gardening. Even if you don't have a yard, you can set up window boxes or balcony planters or even indoor plants to create a beautiful world of flowers, plants and herbs in your very own home. There's so much satisfaction to be had in successfully cultivating that hard-to-grow seed into a healthy green plant or eating a home-grown veggie for the very first time!

The reason I bring all this up is that I learned this afternoon that the Sud-Ouest district in my beautiful city of Montreal will be providing free plants to its citizens this coming Saturday May 28th (read all about it - in French - here). They will be offering perennials, annuals and even some tomato plants *free of charge* to those interested in honing their green thumb. The project hopes to help Montrealers get involved with and beautify their communities while encouraging environmentalism and sustainable growth.

What a fabulous endeavour! Not only is this bringing people of the community together and teaching them a little something at the same time, but it's also helping to improve the area a little bit for everyone's enjoyment. And considering that this is a lower-income neighbourhood, providing all of this without cost to the citizens of this community makes it all the more brilliant.

Sud-Ouest de Montreal, this wonderful project has earned my vote for today's Hooray of the Day, bravo!

My blog is born, hooray!

Alright folks, here it is. My first blog post, the introductory "hooray!" Let's hope I'm able to raise this baby right, feed it and nurture it and allow it to grow into whatever it's meant to be.

Today's "hooray!" is a widespread one, sent out to the world at large in recognition of all those wonderful bloggers before me who have taught me, inspired me and most of all demonstrated to me just how beautiful the blogging community is. It is for the many incredible friends in my life that have helped me find the silver lining, to laugh at myself and to see the beauty, even if only a teeny iota, in everything that I encounter. It is for my wonderful family who have supported me through everything and shaped me into the person I am today.

Hooray to those who have come before me and beside me, who shared and continue sharing, to those who have smiled and those who will smile still. I dedicate this blog, and thus this first post, to all of you. <3
